Now looking back at the weekend, a very impressive accomplishment for a local high school wrestler.
Todd DeGroat, a sophomore at Vestal High School, won the NHSCA Wrestling national championship in his weight class.
This event is the largest wrestling tournament in the country.
DeGroat took home the title after pinning a staggering six consecutive opponents from all across the country.
His head coach at Vestal, Tony Policare, said that he’s never seen a wrestler at any level pin six consecutive opponents in a national event.
Todd made quick work of his opponent, Xavier Doolin of Missouri, in the finals.
Doolin had won 50 matches this season, and it only took DeGroat 23 seconds to pin him to win the championship.
Todd also won a STAC and Section IV title this year, and medaled at the state championships in the 195 weight class.
Congratulations Todd on what is a truly tremendous achievement.
Again, he is only a sophomore. Incredible!
