Local Sports

After their game was washed out on Wednesday, Vestal and Maine-Endwell looked to pick up where they left off in the Class A sectional championship series on Thursday.

The scene shifted to Vestal High School as the Golden Bears looked to force a decisive game three.

Top two, and M-E gets the scoring going.

Riley VanFleet with a poke in the left-center gap.

Scoring with ease is Matt Raleigh, and that gives the Spartans a 1-0 lead.

Same inning, after getting another run on a sacrifice fly, Josh Chandler showing off the wheels.

He reaches on an infield single while also bringing in VanFleet to make it 3-0 M-E.

Top five now, same score until Jack Hopko puts one just shy of the wall in left.

Joe Mancini trots home to make it a 4-0 game.

And then Mike Mancini goes out that way the next inning, scoring Ryan Brozovic.

5-0 Spartans.

Adam Rutkowski was tremendous on the mound, going the distance for the complete game shut out.

He also had a lot of help from his defense behind him.

M-E wins this one 7-0 to clinch the 2019 Class A section championship in a two-game sweep.

After being pulled from the bottom of the dog pile and having smiled for some pictures, Rutkowski spoke about his outing.

“I feel pretty good. Throwing the ball real well on the mound, and they were hitting them right to my fielders. They were making the plays and I was trusting them to do what they did for me,” he said.

Next up for M-E, the Spartans will face the Section I champs in the state subregionals.

That’ll be next Thursday at 4:30 pm over at NYSEG Stadium.
