Ponies fall short to Curve 9-8

Local Sports

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies had a strong showing on Tuesday, sweeping a doubleheader with the Altoona Curve, including a walk-off grand slam in game two.

They looked to carry that momentum into their game Wednesday morning.

It was Education Day down at NYSEG Stadium.

Thousands of kids filled the stands to watch the Ponies and the Curve.

And obviously have to sing Baby Shark today … c’mon now.

Ponies got things going right away in the first.

Two on for Barrett Barnes, and he drives this one deep to center.

Not quite enough to get out, but damage still done.

Arismendy Alcantara and Andres Gimenez in to score.

2-0 Binghamton.

Next batter, Patrick Mazeika, and he tees off on this ball.

After his walk-off grand slam Tuesday, Mazeika strokes another homer here, his third of the year.

This time, it’s a three-run shot to make it a 5-0 Ponies lead.

Bottom of the 2nd, 5-2 now and it’s Mazeika again.

Finds the weak spot in the defense and brings home Sam Haggerty.

That’s Mazeika’s 8th RBI in just over 13 hours!

He adds to the Ponies lead, now 6-2.

To the 7th, 6-5 Ponies until Logan Hill lines one into left.

Two runners in to score, and for the first time in the game, the Curve have the lead.

9-6 Altoona in the 9th.

But, Bingo trying to rally.

Mazeika up with the bases loaded, and there’s no one hotter than Patrick Mazeika right now.

A two-run double into right makes it a one run game.

But, Michael Paez would ground into a game-ending double play.

Altoona wins it, 9-8.

Despite the loss, Ponies manager Kevin Boles was still impressed with the way his club battled throughout.

“They’re terrific. I love the way these guys compete. Today, we just didn’t pitch well. We left some mistakes out over the plate. Obviously, with the lineup that they have, if you make mistakes out over the plate, they’re going to touch you. But, our guys, they compete well. I love the way these guys go about their business,” he said.

The Ponies now hit the road for their next six, beginning with a huge three-game set in Trenton against the first place Thunder.

Game one is Thursday with a 7:00 PM first pitch.
