Earlier Thursday over at Maine-Endwell High School, senior Mia McCarthy signed her National Letter of Intent to attend the University of Nevada Las Vegas, where she’ll be a member of the cheerleading squad.
McCarthy was a member of some impressive teams at M-E, including the 2017 Section IV championship squad that went on to a runner-up finish at the New York State Championships.
Mia is a member of the National Honor Society, president of the High School Student Council, and she’s also the student Board of Education member.
McCarthy also volunteers at Yesteryears, an adult day program for seniors over 60 years of age who are frail, isolated, or memory-impaired.
Mia’s also been through quite a lot herself.
Just after this past Thanksgiving, Mia was diagnosed with stage one lung cancer.
This came after a tumor caused one of her lungs to partially collapse.
She had successful surgery to remove the tumor in January and was declared cancer free.
Less than three weeks later, Mia was back with her team for STAC’s and sectionals.
Congratulations to Mia and her family on her signing, and there’s no doubt she’ll go on to do great things.
What an inspiration.
