The Binghamton University men’s basketball team hit the road Friday afternoon with Long Island as their destination.
The 7th-seeded Bearcats will take on the two seed,
Stony Brook, in the America East Quarterfinals Saturday night.
Earlier Friday, freshman phenom Sam Sessoms was named the America East Rookie of the Year and was also named Third Team All-Conference.
Ranked in the top 10 of several different categories, Sessoms says that receiving those accolades are great, but he and the team have their eyes set on a bigger prize.
“Just everyone on the team, we’d love to have more days with them in practice, in the locker room, workouts. Especially a few more games, and for us to do that, for myself, it would mean a lot. But, I think the real reason I want to do it is spend more time with the seniors, coaches, and my teammates. We’ve all been setting up and we’re ready to make a run,” he said.
The Bearcats dropped both their games against Stony Brook this season, and come into the tournament having lost three of their final four games.
But, BU head coach Tommy Dempsey believes despite that, his team is heading to Stony Brook with their heads up and are ready to battle.
“Even though we didn’t play well in our final game against Albany, we did come back the last couple days in practice and I saw that same team. That team that was playing well as the season went on. So, it’s all about tomorrow night’s performance. I feel like the guys have prepared well over the last three days. They’re excited for the opportunity. I think we’re getting on the bus with confidence,” Dempsey says.
We’ll find out in a little under 24 hours if that confidence will pay off for Binghamton.
The Bearcats and Seawolves tip off tomorrow at 7:00 pm.
