DeSantis signs NLI to play football at Colgate University

With Christmas just days away now, this is a time of both giving and receiving.

And what can be better than receiving a college education?

That’s what one local high schooler was guaranteed with a signature on Thursday.

At Maine-Endwell High School, senior AJ DeSantis made his commitment to college next year official as he signed his National Letter of Intent to play Division I football at Colgate University.

A four-year starter on the offensive line for M-E, DeSantis is planning on studying Biology and Pre-Med at Colgate.

He signed his NLI in front of family, friends, and well-wishers.

AJ said that he’s known for awhile now that Colgate was the place for him, and that it feels great to finally make it official.

“I mean, it just feels amazing. The one day I went up last year, I think it was in March, they gave me my offer. That was when it really kind of struck me that, ‘Wow, I can really go to the place that I’ve always wanted to’. I’ve known forever because of the support I’ve had from Al Wisniweski, who’s there right now. He’s graduating, I think, a day or two. And coach, who went there and did really well. So, I mean, it’s just a place that I love,” he said.

AJ’s head coach here at M-E, Matt Gallagher, has been thoroughly impressed with AJ’s career both on the field and in the class room.

Gallagher believes that AJ has earned everything that’s come his way, and that his legacy left behind is one that others should aspire to.

“He did everything the right way. He did everything the right way. He played the game the way it was supposed to be played. He represented our team and the school the way that he was supposed to. With all that being done, he did it at a very, very high level. When you can do that, that’s pretty special,” said Gallagher.

DeSantis isn’t done with sports yet at M-E, as he’s currently playing basketball.

He told me he wouldn’t be making the trip to Alaska with his team, but he has total faith in his squad picking up some wins without him.

Congratulations to AJ and his family on this tremendous accomplishment, and best of luck in your future.
