Bills sign All-Pro kick returner

If you can’t stop him, sign him.

The Bills did just that Wednesday, reportedly adding top kick returner Andre Roberts. The same man who torched Buffalo in a loss to the Jets at Orchard Park.

It wasn’t just in Buffalo. Last year, Roberts was the NFL’s All-Pro return man and was named the Pro Bowl.

Against the Bills, Roberts returned back to back kickoffs for 51 and 86 yards. The runbacks led to ten Jets points in a four point win.

He finished the season tied for the league lead in punt return average at 14.1 yards per runback. He was second with a 29.4 yard average on kick returns. He was the only man in the league with two return touchdowns last year. He was the only one with a kick and punt return touchdown last year.

The concern with Roberts is that he is 31 years old and last season seems more anamoly than trend. He’s only had one other season in the top ten for return average as either a punt or kick returner (2016-punt retuns).

The Jets reportedly had no interest in re-signing Roberts and let him walk, despite bringing back the same special teams coach from 2018.

Roberts did have two punt return scores for the Lions in 2016 and a kick return touchdown for Washington in 2015. He is a receiver by trade, but has not caught more than 14 passes in a season since 2014.

There was no report on the contract terms. The Bills will be his sixth NFL team and the fourth in the last four seasons.
