Olympian reflects on Olympic doping

Going for the Gold 2016

Many Olympians have been caught doping in recent years. Alysia Montano, a 2012 track Olympian and 2016 hopeful, shares her viewpoint on “dirty athletes.”

“It’s been a very interesting emotion of happiness, anger, forgiveness, happiness, anger forgiveness, happiness. I’m really trying to put the ones that are hateful away and kind of put the ones that are…honestly, I feel sorry for them. I feel sorry that they couldn’t recognize the very essence of sport. And recognize that it is about self-betterment, it is about those inspirational moments, it is about digging deep and seeing the very best version of yourself and what you can pull out of yourself. And for that I actually just really want to show them what it can look like and I think that’s more motivation than loathing or hating can ever do.”

A total of 55 samples from the 2008 and 2012 games have been confirmed by the International Olympic Committee. Twenty-two were from Russian athletes.
