Bills Add QB Simms, Cut Tuel

Matt Simms asked for the Jets to release him on Thursday. Since New York added two quarterbacks in a ten day period this month–drafting Bryce Petty and signing undrafted free agent Jake Heaps–Simms thought he had a better shot to land a job elsewhere.

By Friday, the move looked like a good gamble.

The Bills claimed Simms off waivers and, in turn, waived quarterback Jeff Tuel. Simms told the Bergen Record he’s happy to be re-united with head coach Rex Ryan and quarterbacks coach David Lee–two guys who know his “personality.”

“I’m looking forward to getting back to work and learning a new offense,” Simms said. “I’ll see what I can do. … I’m happy to be moving on to a place that i’m wanted and [where] I can grow.”

The move leaves EJ Manuel as the only quarterback on the Bills roster that was not brought to Buffalo by Ryan.

Simms was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Jets in May of 2012, but was a casualty of final cuts and was not on a roster for the 2012 season.

The Jets re-signed him on New Year’s Eve that year and he spent 2013 on their active roster. Simms played in three games and threw a touchdown pass against the Bills in a blowout Buffalo win. He started the 2014 season on the Jets practice squad, but was elevated to the active roster in November and appeared in one game.

Simms is the son of Giants great Phil Simms and the younger brother of retired journeyman QB Chris Simms.

Tuel’s days seemed numbered the moment Doug Marrone left Buffalo. Tuel seemed to be a Marrone favorite, but played in only two games over two seasons.

He was forced into action against the Chiefs in his only NFL start in November of 2013 after injuries to Manuel and backup Thad Lewis. Tuel completed 18 of 39 passes for 229 yards and a touchdown in that game, but threw two interceptions. One was famously returned 100 yards for a touchdown by Sean Smith. It swung the game from a potential 17-3 Bills lead to a 10-10 tie and Buffalo never recovered.
