‘Welcome Home’ ceremony honors those that served

In Owego today, those that served were honored in recognition of National Vietnam Veterans Day.

The Tioga County Veterans’ Service Agency hosted its 2nd Annual Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day.

It began with a wreath-laying ceremony at the memorial outside the County Courthouse followed by a ceremony at the Owego VFW Post 1371.

All Vietnam Era veterans, the families of those killed in action and the families of veterans that have recently passed away were honored.

State Commander for the Military Order of the Purple Heart William Nazario says we can never forget the sacrifices that have been made.

“As purple heart recipients we recognize the fact that not all wounds are visible. Many of us come home with emotional wounds and things of that nature. Like we say some gave all and all gave some and vice versa,” he said.

Nazario says he normally spends this day in Albany for a ceremony.

But he wanted to be in Owego to celebrate Tioga County’s new designation as a Purple Heart County.
