ALBANY, 03/04/19 — State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I/Ref–Oneonta) today proudly welcomed Joseph (JP) Dewey from Sidney High School to Albany as part of the annual “Music in our Schools Month” celebration in New York State.
“Performances like the ones coordinated by the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) are a terrific showcase for the talent that exists in schools throughout the state,” said Senator Seward. “It was great to meet with JP Dewey, hear the results of his hard work, and congratulate him on this terrific accomplishment.”
Joseph (JP) Dewey, a senior at Sidney High School, performed as a member of the prestigious All State Instrumental Jazz Ensemble. He is the first ever pianist from the Sidney area to be selected to play with the 18 member group.
Choirs, orchestras and bands from across the state travel to Albany throughout the month of March to perform in the concourse of the Empire State Plaza as part of “Music in our Schools Month”.
“Music education plays an important role in developing a well-rounded student. Problem solving, creativity and critical thinking are just a few of the skills enhanced through music. I have fought long and hard to protect aid to our schools so programs like music will continue to receive much needed funding. I will continue to advocate for this key aid moving forward,” Seward concluded.
