Senator Fred Akshar’s survey on legalizing recreational marijuana

News

State Senator Fred Akshar is releasing another online survey, this one seeking his constituents’ thoughts on legalizing recreational marijuana.

One of the key provisions in Governor Cuomo’s proposal is to establish separate licensing programs for marijuana growers, distributors and retailers with a ban on growers also opening retail shops.

Other provisions include a 20% state tax and a 2% local tax on the sale of the drug from retailers plus a per-gram tax on growers.

There would also be the option for counties and large cities to ban the sale of marijuana, and there would be no selling to anyone under the age of 21.

Cuomo estimates that legalization would bring in $300 million in tax revenue each year when fully implemented in 2023.
