Schumer talks about the government shutdown

After his stop in Binghamton, Senator Schumer traveled up 81 to Syracuse where he discussed the current government shutdown.

Now in it’s 24th day, the federal government shutdown has surpassed the previous record of 21 days for the longest shutdown in U.S history. that was set in 1996.

Last week President Trump walked out on a meeting with Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi after Pelosi said no to a border wall.

Schumer says that it wasn’t them that walked out of the last meeting with President Trump and that they’re ready to discuss border security whenever. “Well we’re ready to negotiate any time. This week I was on the phone with 20 different senators. Again it’s nothing new but I’ll say it again. We should open up the government and debate border security not as hostage but just debate it and get it done. But not have the government shutdown while we’re debating.”

Schumer added that he agrees with Republican Senator Lindsey Graham’s idea.

Graham proposed to that the President open up the government for about a month to give the two sides an opportunity to negotiate a deal.
