The Safe Housing Task Force held an open forum to discuss ways to improve the quality of low-income housing in our area.
The task force was started last year by the county with the goal of creating more quality housing especially in the urban core.
County Executive Jason Garnar says one suggestion is for municipalities to enact a rental registration which is something the county cannot do.
He says rental properties should be inspected once every year or two to make sure they are safe.
Garnar says far too many poor people are living in substandard conditions. “How do we work together to address the problems we have with this housing crisis. I’m going to call it a crisis here in Broome County. We really need to do a better job of making sure that homes that people are living in are safe that they’re healthy homes and that’s the goal.”
Garnar says after hearing the community’s input, the committee will have a couple months to put together some formal recommendations that can be put into action.
