BUFFALO, N.Y. — This spring, American Red Cross volunteers and partners will visit local homes to help install 100,000 free smoke alarms during a national effort to Sound the Alarm against home fires.

SOUND THE ALARM, SAVE A LIFE From April 27 to May 12, the Western and Central New York Region is rallying volunteers and partners to install over 2,200 free smoke alarms, replace batteries in existing alarms, and help families create home fire escape plans as part a national effort. Services are free and available for all those in need. Home fire safety and smoke alarm installation events are scheduled at the dates, times, and locations below:

•    Greater Rochester: Saturday, April 27
•    Central New York: Saturday, May 4
•    Western New York: Saturday, May 11
•    Finger Lakes: Saturday, May 11
•    Southern Tier: Regular installations scheduled between April 27-May 12

People can visit www.soundthealarm.org/wcny for more information and to register for a free installation appointment.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED The Red Cross is seeking volunteers to help install 100,000 free smoke alarms during a two-week push of Sound the Alarm home fire safety events next month.

People can register now at www.soundthealarm.org/wcny to volunteer at home fire safety and smoke alarm installation across Western and Central New York, and raise donations to help save lives from home fires. These crises are the nation’s most frequent disaster and kill seven people each day—often in homes without working smoke alarms.

“Neighbors vulnerable to home fires need your support today to prevent needless tragedies,” said Alan H. Turner II, American Red Cross, Western and Central New York Regional Chief Executive Officer. “You can help families by ensuring they have working smoke alarms and know how to stay safe from these everyday disasters. Please join us to volunteer and raise funds to support our free, lifesaving services.”

OUR CAMPAIGN TO #ENDHOMEFIRES Sound the Alarm events are part of the Home Fire Campaign, which the Red Cross launched in 2014 to reduce fire deaths and injuries. So far, it has reached more than 1.7 million people and saved more than 500 lives nationwide. In Western and Central New York, the Red Cross and local partners have:

•    Installed more than 20,000 free smoke alarms
•    Saved at least 20 lives
•    Made more than 7,000 households safer
•    Reached more than 13,000 children through youth preparedness programs

This work is made possible thanks to generous financial donations from regional partners and the support of leaders across the region.
