Professional pollster shares thoughts on 2016 Election while in Binghamton

One of the most respected analytic minds in Washington came to Binghamton today to share her perspective on this year’s Presidential election outcome.

Diane Feldman, President of The Feldman Group, a political polling firm, was the guest speaker at the BU Forum luncheon.

Feldman says the election of Donald Trump provided 3 major takeaways:

  • The US is an extremely divided country.
  • Voters want change, especially economic change
  • Fewer Americans are committed to a specific political party

“The number of people who had voted for President Obama in 2012, who does retain high approval ratings. And yet, many of the counties where Obama had had a very strong performance are also counties where President-Elect Trump had strong performance. So, there are certainly a number of people who voted for Obama 2012 and Trump in 2016,” said Feldman.

Feldman also listed 3 reasons why she thinks most pollsters wrongly predicted that Hillary Clinton would win.

  • Lower than expected voter turnout, especially among Democrats
  • Trump winning over the vast majority of voters who made their decision late
  • An increasing number of people who are reluctant to speak to pollsters
