Police arrested a man for trying to burn down the Dixie Hotel

Binghamton Police have arrested a man for trying to burn down the old Dixie Hotel on Henry Street.

Police charged 59 year-old Jerry Hopkins with arson.

Investigators say that shortly after 6 A-M yesterday, Hopkins, who lives next door at 104 Henry Street, broke into the building owner’s office on the first floor of the rooming house that is now known as the Dixie 2000.

Hopkins allegedly doused the room with a liquid accelerant and lit it creating a minor explosion that caused significant damage.

The building’s sprinkler system put out the fire.

No residents were injured and they were allowed to return after a brief evacuation.
