Parents are asking questions after drugs were found at a local pre-school.

A small packet containing illegal drugs was found on the floor at the Cub Care Children’s Center in Vestal last Wednesday.

Sarrah Afifiy, a mother with 3 children in the program, says parents weren’t informed about the incident until they got an email at around 5 p.m. on Monday.

She says they’ve been told two different answers for what the substance is that was found.

Afifiy says she has used Cub Care for years and wants to keep her kids in the program, but she and other parents are on the fence after how this was handled.

She wonders what would happen if kids were exposed to the drugs and parents weren’t informed until days later. “I’ve never felt uneasy about having them here before. But when you find something like this, I mean things happen. Hopefully, it’s not an everyday thing but the way it was handled makes you feel really uneasy about trusting them going forward.”

Afify says she and other parents plan to attend the next board meeting of the Vestal School District and hope for new policies and training to prepare for similar situations in the future.

Cub Care is an independent organization located within the former Central School Building that offers pre-K through an agreement with the district.

The district released a statement saying it is working with the provider to establish appropriate protocols to protect student safety.

The Vestal Police Department is also conducting an investigation.
