The number of people dying of drug overdoses in Broome County continues to decline.

District Attorney Steve Cornwell says that in 2018, there were 31 OD deaths, that’s down from 66 in 2017 and 76 in 2016.

The average age of the victims last year was 40.

The majority of the victims were male at 71%.

56% of the deaths took place in the City of Binghamton, 16% in the Town of Union and the remaining 28% were spread throughout the county.

Heroin and other opioids were responsible for 94% of the deaths.

There are two additional deaths that are still under review pending toxicology reports.
