Northrup prepares to travel to Barcelona to represent the US

Supporters are raising money to send Bomber to Barcelona to compete in roller derby on the world stage.

Kristine Northrup, who uses the nickname “Bomber,” is a member of the USA women’s roller derby team.

She’s one of 20 players on the team that will be participating in the 2019 World Roller Games in Spain in July.

In roller derby, 5 players from each team are on the rink at any time, less if players are in the penalty box, and the objective is for 4 of them called blockers to help their jammer pass the other team’s blockers as they zip around the rink.

Northrup, who is also a fitness instructor, says she loves the strategy, endurance and rush of adrenaline she gets from the sport.

And she says spectators love it too.

“It’s a lot of competition, everyone has showy tricks to present as far as skating goes. The gameplay is very playful. It’s just so interactive with the crowd.”

Northrup says she needs to raise between 5 and 7 thousand dollars to pay for her trip to Barcelona.

A fundraiser is planned for Sunday, March 24th at Touch of Texas on Upper Front Street in the Town of Chenango.

The Rhythm Hill Blues Band will perform and there will be raffle prizes.

It runs from 1 until 4; admission is $5.
