Locals gather to celebrate Doctor Martin Luther King Jr

As the nation remembers Doctor Martin Luther King Junior, people gathered locally to celebrate his impact.

The Broome-Tioga NAACP held its annual MLK Day celebration at Binghamton Ciy Hall.

Multiple local community leaders including Binghamton Mayor Rich David and area students, spoke about many of the great things the civil rights leader accomplished and the legacy he has left behind.

Local NAACP President Micah Barreiro says its a day to remember and reflect.

Students from the Trinity AME Zion Church Praise Dance Team, the Christian Unity Church Youth Group ARMY, and the Union-Endicott step team performed.

Barreiro says it was very encouraging to see all the young people in attendance.

He says our future leaders need to understand our past.

The Broome-Tioga NAACP also had its new officers sworn in by Mayor David during the event.
