Donna Sakers has been a foster grandparent for Whitney Point kindergartners for 10 years.

She says its a relationship that everyone involved gets a lot out of. “Having the kids run up to me ‘grandma how are you.’ When they’ve moved onto second, third grade and on up and they see you in the hall an they still yell ‘grandma’ and they run up and give you a big hug. It’s like wow, I did something, I touched that child’s heart.”

Over the past year foster grandparents have devoted 50,000 hours of volunteer time to help 150 children in 23 elementary schools in Broome County.
