WINDSOR, N.Y. - A Windsor High School teacher has been awarded for his excellence in the classroom.
US History Teacher Scott Symons has been given the Empire State Excellence in Teaching Award, where educators from around the state are honored for their commitment to the classroom.
He was surprised with the honor Tuesday at Windsor High School.
He received a plaque along with a $5,000 dollar stipend.
Symons began teaching 15 years ago at Windsor after transitioning from a career in computer software.
He says he was shocked when he found out he was being honored.
"I don't think there are words to describe it. As a teacher, we don't expect or want recognition like this. We just put our heads down, love our kids and work hard," said Symons.
Symons says he was told to come to the meeting to discuss the 2018 school budget, but thought something was up when he saw his father, Bill Symons, a former educator and coach who inspired him to pursue a career as a teacher, standing in the corner of the room.
