Wegmans has set out an ambitious plan for reducing its use of plastics, including a decision to discontinue single-use plastic grocery bags prior to New York’s ban going into effect.
Wegmans is planning to stop using the plastic bags in its New York stores sometime this Fall.
Meantime, it’s set a goal to lower its use of in-store plastics by 2 million pounds this year and 10 million pounds by 2024.
To that end, it has already eliminated plastic straws and stir sticks and replaced them with renewable fiber alternatives.
In the past, Wegmans reduced the amount of plastic in its food bar containers, switched to pouches rather than containers for its rotisserie chicken and introduced produce bags with 100% plant-based renewable materials.
