The UHS led a program to combat Substance Use Disorder is just about ready to get started at the Broome County Jail.
UHS Administrative Director of Behavioral Health Alan Wilmarth was at a County Legislative Session explaining how the program will work.
All inmates brought into the jail will be screened for an alcohol or substance use disorder.
Those that are found to have one will be offered the opportunity to take part in medication assisted treatment.
Those found to have an issue with opioids will be treated with Suboxone.
Wilmarth says overdose deaths skyrocket for those leaving jail due to their loss of tolerance to the drugs.
He says this program is designed to get those in need into treatment and to help them stay on the right path after leaving jail.
