Binghamton Rumble Ponies outfielder Tim Tebow has come to the Parlor City.
He arrived in our area Monday where he took a tour of the Greater Binghamton area and was seen making a stop at CoreLife Eatery in Vestal.
Tuesday, Tebow laced up his cleats and took the field for the first day of practice.
Tim Tebow made his way to Rumbletown Tuesday alongside his teammates wearing snow hats instead of baseball caps.
The first practice of the season was held Tuesday at Noon in just 35-degree weather with rain putting a damper on most of the outdoor activities.
Tebow and the team warmed up and played catch for about 15 minutes before heading to the indoor cage to take batting practice.
Tebow focused on his swing, hand placement on the bat along with his timing as he took cuts in the cage.
While pitchers were throwing in the bullpen, the rest of the team worked on some defensive drills inside the batting cage.
At 2:30 p.m., Tebow returned to the cage for a press conference where he was greeted by State Senator Fred Akshar and Rumble Ponies Owner John Hughes.
Tebow took questions from local and regional media for about 12 minutes discussing last season, his goals for 2018 and his time in Binghamton so far.
Tebow says he’s excited to be in the Southern Tier.
“It feels really good, it feels really good. I’ve only been here for two days but it’s been a lot of fun getting to see the city a little bit and meeting people. Everybody has been very nice,” said Tebow.
Tebow also discussed the clubhouse atmosphere and his relationship with his new teammates.
Tebow is the oldest member on the team at 30-years old and says he wants to be a mentor for the younger players by teaching them how to handle the media and other aspects of being an athlete.
He says he’s excited to hit the field.
“I can’t wait to start on Thursday night. Hopefully we’ll be able to play, but I’m really looking forward to it. I have a lot of fun playing this game and I’m blessed to be a team of really great young men and really good coaches,” said Tebow.
Tebow also says he’d like to spend a lot of time giving back to our community.
Tebow says he will arrange for Make-A-Wish kids to come to games and wants to play a role in the special needs community.
Fans will have their first chance to meet Tebow Tuesday night at the Meet The Rumble Ponies dinner taking place at the Holiday Inn Downtown Binghamton at 5:30 p.m.
Then, the ponies will open their season on Thursday against the Portland Sea Dogs at 6:35 p.m.
NewsChannel 34 will have live coverage leading up to first pitch.
