Some Little Spartans got to see a pro baseball player trade in his bat for a book.

Binghamton Rumble Ponies’ Third Baseman Nick Sergakis came and read a book of his choosing for Maine-Endwell’s Summer Enrichment Students.

The program is free for M-E students entering kindergarten and first grade.

It runs for five weeks and is designed to educate younger students through hands-on and experiential learning opportunities.

Program Coordinator Shannon Green says the students were thrilled to have one of the Ponies join them.

“They were jumping up and down excited. They told us all about how they go to the games and their interest in baseball and sports. We were able to extend it to the literacy part as well,” said Green.

Green says The Rumble Ponies coming to read to the students fits into the theme this week of Sports and Fitness.

After reading, Sergakis answered questions, signed autographs and took pictures with a few students.
