The results are in from State Senator Fred Akshar’s survey on marijuana legalization.
The survey drew in over 2,800 total responses from residents in the 52nd district and across New York State.
Of those surveyed in the 52nd, 48.4% support the legalization of recreational marijuana while 46.1% oppose it.
When Akshar held the same survey last year, only 37% of district residents supported legalization while 55%opposed it.
Those that took the survey outside of the 52nd district supported legalization 75% compared to 23% who opposed.
Many in support of legalization cited benefits from increased revenue, reduced incarceration rates and reduced addiction to harder drugs such as heroin.
Opponents of the proposal cited the dangers of using marijuana and driving along with its potential role as a gateway drug.
