BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - A large crowd gathered to watch local attorney Paul Battisti officially launch his campaign for Broome County District Attorney.
Battisti made the announcement at the DoubleTree Hotel in Binghamton, in front of family, fellow lawyers and members of law enforcement and chiefs of police.
Born and raised in Broome County, Battisti has handled thousands of cases across the whole spectrum of law during his 14 years as an attorney and now runs his own private practice Battisti Law Offices.
Battisti says he can help mend the relationship between local law enforcement and the District Attorney's Office. "Right now it's no surprise that the relationship with current administration's District Attorney's Office and local law enforcement is fractured. Just looking around seeing all the members of local law enforcement here today, the sheriff, chiefs of many local departments. I think that's clear proof that I'm the candidate that can do that."
Battisti says he wants to set up a multi-disciplinary task force among neighboring counties to work together to fight crime.
Battisti is also involved with multiple community organizations including the Broome County Drug Treatment Court Team, Criminal Justice Advisory Board, Boys and Girls Club of Western Broome and serves as Chair of the Board of GHS Federal Credit Union.
Current DA Steve Cornwell announced earlier this month that he will not seek a second term this November.
Battisti is expected to square off against Mike Korchak in a Republican primary in June.
