CANDOR, N.Y. - A local kayak and watercraft retailer is letting customers paddle out on the water before leaving the store.
Route 96 Power & Paddle has constructed a test pond behind its showroom located at 1035 Owego Road in Candor.
Co-Owner Jim Signs cleared out a side hill and a number of trees and constructed a 15-foot deep pond that's filled with trout and minnows.
Before, customers would select something to try from the store then drive 5 minutes to a nearby pond operated by Power and Paddle.
Signs says the new pond saves customers a lot of time.
"If someone has a particular model they want to try, it's a 60 second trip. We can go get whichever model or color they want. We have about 50 models on-site, but they're welcome to pull a new one off of the wall and try it to make sure it's exactly what they want," said Signs.
While we were there, Senator Akshar tried out a standing paddle board on the water.
The pond is open during regular business hours, Monday through Saturday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursdays.
Route 96 Power and Paddle also offers classes on kayaking and paddle boarding.
