Lourdes Hospital was doing its part to educate the public on a disease that affects millions of Americans
The hospital held its annual Diabetes Fair.
Staff and members of the public were able to come and learn about the latest in diabetic care from various vendors and hospital departments.
Lourdes Diabetic Center Director Sheryl Dalton says 30% of the hospital’s patients have diabetes.
While there is no way to prevent type 1 diabetes, she says there are ways people can help avoid type 2.
Sheryl Dalton Program Director Lourdes Diabetes Center says “A little education goes a long way. So certainly those lifestyle changes that I alluded to would be the learning how to eat properly, avoid excessive fats and sugars. Exercise, the role of exercise is so vitally important.”
Dalton says those with pre-diabetes can greatly reduce their risk of getting diabetes by reducing their body weight 5 to 7%.
She says there’s been a lot of advancements made in diabetic care but there is still more room for improvement.
