Late Wednesday afternoon, President Trump signed an executive order ending the separation of families at the U.S Mexico border.
Earlier Wednesday, local advocates had gathered to speak out against the policy.
Speak Out Central New York held a rally outside of Congresswoman Claudia Tenney’s Binghamton office to protest the Trump administration’s policy of separating illegal immigrant families.
They also criticized Tenney’s support for Republican tax reform and her opposition to Obamacare.
Local residents shared personal stories on how the tax reform is actually raising their taxes.
The Reverend Tim Taugher says immigrant families should stay together.
“Here we just had some children and I was looking over to them and thinking what would it be like to yank those children away from their mother. I mean is this what we’re about, I’m sick as so many are,” said Taugher.
According to Tenney’s campaign, her constituents are entitled to free speech.
But a spokesperson notes that 97 percent of voters in New York’s 22nd District received a tax cut this year.
And that President Trump is working toward protecting American jobs by renegotiating bad trade deals.
