Governor Cuomo's opponents react to 'We're not going to make America great again' comments

ALBANY, N.Y. - The Governor's statement yesterday at a bill signing in Manhattan has the entire nation reacting, including President Trump.

NewsChannel 34's Morgan McKay explains how many of the Governor's opponents are leaping on this moment.

"We're not going to make America great again, It was never that great," said Cuomo.

As you can imagine, this statement sent shock waves throughout the state Wednesday. A short time after these comments were made, the Governor's office tried to clarify by saying that the Governor really does believe America is great, but America's true potential is not realized until every person is fully equal.

"We will reach greatness when every American is fully engaged," said Cuomo.

However the Republicans of course, are jumping on this moment.

Republican nominee for Governor, Marc Molinaro immediately sent out a statement saying the Governor  needs to apologize to every American. And appeared on Fox and Friends  to again criticize the Governor.

"This nation, its promise, its purpose, its principals and its people have always been great. And that determined march to making things better that's what has always made America great. I'm ashamed to think my Governor doesn't know that," said Molinaro.

President Donald Trump tweeted "Can you believe this is the Governor of the Highest Taxed State in the U.S., Andrew Cuomo, having a total meltdown!"

This caused the Governor to tweet back, "What you say would be 'great again' would not be great at all...We will not go back to discrimination, segregation, sexism, isolationism, racism or the KKK."

The State GOP this morning bought Cuomo a one-way bus ticket to Canada saying that  if Cuomo believes his own remarks he should leave the country.

Not to be left out, Cynthia Nixon, his Democratic challenger in the primary, came out today saying that Andrew Cuomo makes America cringe again.  "I think this is just another example of Andrew Cuomo trying to figure out what a progressive sounds like and missing by a mile."

A few state union leaders have tweeted in support of the Governor.
