Former dance teacher sentenced for sexually abusing children

Local News

A former Waverly dance teacher is going to prison for sexually abusing two children.

Julie Kay Werkheiser, 400 was sentenced to 11 years to life for abusing two of her dance students from July 2006 to November 2007.

According to police, Werkheiser sexually abused the children, who were 6 and 8 years old at the time, at the Studio-J Dance on Broad Street in Waverly.

The business was owned and operated by Werkheiser.

State Police were notified of the incidents in 2014.

Police also say Werkheiser’s domestic partner, Samantha Stone of Waverly, was accused of sexually abusing a child under the age of 13 in Binghamton.

She was convicted and sentenced to 12 years to life in prison in 2013, but a state appeals court has ordered a new trial.
