Binghamton (WIVT) – A local organization is working to beautify blighted properties.
Members and volunteers for the Department of Public art installed an 11-piece food-themed mural at a property on Chenango Street Monday afternoon.
The project is part of a grant through the Chenango County Arts Council.
The volunteers are creating artwork that will be placed on blighted properties in hopes of not only beautifying the neighborhood, but attracting new businesses and tenants.
Volunteer Shawna Stevens said she hopes the community will fall in love with the new images.
“I think it’s wonderful because before there was just plain plywood that was boarding up the broken windows behind them. Now, we’re putting actual art on the property and I think the neighbors will appreciate it too,” she said.
Stevenson said some of the murals were created during Mural Fest.
She said there are a number of properties that will have artwork in the coming months.
Sampson also said other themes will be incorporated into the artwork.
