First Friday: Indoor labyrinth walk at Christ Church

Local News

The First Friday Art Walk will features a contemplative installation focusing on the universal appeal of the Virgin Mary.

Artist Yvonne Lucia has brought her indoor labyrinth walk to the Great Hall at Christ Church on Henry Street.

Labyrinths are ancient geometric paths used for meditation and prayer.

Surrounding the circuitous path are 12 painted icons Lucia created inspired by 12 titles of Mary taken from litanies from the Middle Ages such as Star of the Sea, Gate of Heaven and Comforter of the Afflicted.

She also wrote poems to go with each image.

Lucia says she’s been surprised and overwhelmed by the response of people who have walked it.

“Something about the walk itself, the images and the prayer poems that are with them, just invite a deeply reflective experience.  And many people leave and are very touched to the point of tears,” said Lucia.

Christ Church, located across the street from the Lost Dog, will also exhibit watercolors by artist Cheryl DeLuke, who will paint a portrait of her dog Bud during the evening.

The labyrinth walk will remain at the church through December 14th with opportunities for the public to experience it at various times.
