Evertech Senior received Akshar All-Star award

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - A local high school senior who's turned his life around has been recognized for his accomplishment.

Evertech Senior Austin Skojec was selected as an Akshar All-Star during a surprise ceremony Tuesday at the BOCES main campus.

Evertech is an alternative high school run by BOCES.

Skojec joined the program after having struggled in his freshman year at Vestal.

At the time, he says he was unmotivated and falling behind.

Since coming to Evertech, his teachers say he has become a leader and a role model for the other students.

They also describe him as self-motivated with a desire for knowledge, a good communicator and a team player who often puts others before himself.

"I feel so accomplished now.  I don't like to brag but I'm proud of myself.  I did something good for myself and it feels good.  I believe everyone should have that opportunity to turn their life around and do something good for themselves," said Skojec.

Skojec has been studying auto mechanics at BOCES and interning at a local car dealership where he hopes to get a job after graduation.

As an Akshar All-Star, he received a t-shirt, framed certificate, and a challenge coin.

He's the 16th student honored by State Senator Fred Akshar for their accomplishments.
