Elmira native Molly Huddle sets American record in 10K final

Elmira native Molly Huddle, 31, set a new 10K American record Friday at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Huddle finished in 6th place with a time of 30:13.17.

Huddle broke the previous mark of 30:22.22 set by Shalane Flanagan at the 2008 Olympics. 

Almaz Ayan set a new world record running a 29:17.45 for Olympic gold.

The now two-time Olympian was honored Thursday at Wisner Park, where Elmira Mayor Dan Mandell announced that Aug. 12 would be “Molly Huddle Day” in Elmira.
