Local News

District Attorney Candidate Paul Battisti discussed his plan to tackle an issue that has flown under the radar.

Joined by local senior citizens, Battisti laid out his plan to combat Elder abuse.

The 4 step plan he presented aims to form an elder abuse task force, hold offenders accountable to the fullest extent of the law. provide restitution to victims, and provide more community education and preventative services.

Battisti says this is an issue that needs more awareness brought to it.

“Ask yourselves, when’s the last time you read an article or saw on the news a victim being prosecuted for victimizing our elderly community. Currently here in Broome County, 18 percent of our population fits this classification. It defies logic to think we’re not hearing more about this.”

Some examples of elder abuse include domestic violence or neglect, financial exploitation and abuse of “Power of attorney” who is supposed to act in the best interests of the individual.

Battisti says often times the offenders are family members or caregivers.
