Corsage prom cards will have drug-free messages for students

Area students preparing for the prom are getting one more reminder to stay off drugs and alcohol during their big night.

A number of area florists, including Gennarelli’s Flower Shop on Court Street in Binghamton, are handing out corsage prom cards with messages and statistics about staying drug and alcohol free.

Distributed by the Broome Opioid Abuse Council, the cards read “Keep Calm and Be Yourself” to remind prom-goers to not give in to peer pressure.

On the back, there are statistics about the dangers of drinking and driving along with reminders to speak up for a sober ride home.

“We’re hoping that every time they see this card, they can think twice about their decision they’ll make throughout their life. It will give them one more piece of encouragement to say no if they do get peer pressured,” said said Kara Skellet.

“Anybody we can help, any life we can save and any kid we can stop from using drugs or alcohol, we’re all for it,” said Owner Victoria Paoletti.

Other participating flower shops include Dillenbeck’s Flowers, Endicott Florist, Angeline’s Flowers & Greenhouse, and Country Marketplace Florist.

Gennarelli’s plans to hand out over 300 corsages for prom season, which begins this weekend.
