Congresswoman Tenney discusses support of ICE

Local News

Republicans in Washington DC have scrapped plans to vote on a Democrat-sponsored bill to abolish ICE.

GOP Congresswoman Claudia Tenney was among those encouraging a vote as a way to make Democrats “put up or shut up.”

Tenney says doing away with Immigration and Customs Enforcement would be recklessly misguided and dangerous.

She says ICE officers are public servants working to keep terrorists, drugs, human traffickers, and violent criminals out of our country.

“To say that we need to abolish ICE is really coming of a really left-wing kind of socialist movement that almost has an open borders feel to it.  It’s coming out of well-known people such as Cynthia Nixon, who is challenging Governor Cuomo, Kirsten Gillibrand who has called for the abolition of ICE.  It confounds me that they don’t have the respect for our law enforcement arm. Now, is ICE a perfect organization?  Probably not. But they’re trying to do a very difficult job,” said Tenney.

Tenney co-sponsored a resolution in the House supporting ICE personnel.

A spokesperson for Senator Kirsten Gillibrand provided the following response:

“Senator Gillibrand opposes separating children from their parents and believes we need to separate the criminal justice and immigration missions and reimagine ICE under a new agency to build something that actually works. In fact, 19 elite investigative ICE agents agree with the Senator’s position and wrote to DHS Secretary Nielsen asking her to dissolve the agency because President Trump’s policies are forcing ICE to use its resources to focus on minor, non-violent, low priority civil offenders rather than transnational crime, child pornography, and terror risks. The President’s immigration policies are immoral and inhumane and are actually weakening our security – not enhancing it.” – Alexandria Phillips, Gillibrand Spokeswoman
