Candidates for DA hold a community forum at SUNY Broome

Local News

All the Candidates for Broome County District Attorney came together to answer questions from the community.

The candidates were at SUNY Broome for a forum open to the public where they all answered a series of questions on a wide range of topics.

While much of the attention is on the upcoming Republican primary between Mike Korchak and Paul Battisti, democratic candidate Debra Gelson also participated in the event.

Gelson has practiced law for 35 years, spending time as a sex crimes and child abuse prosecutor, an assistant county prosecutor in New Jersey, a municipal court judge and is currently a defense attorney for Tully Rinckey.

Debra Gelson Candidate for DA says “We need to do something different and I believe in criminal justice reform. I believe it can be properly implemented. I believe that we can all work together, I believe we can collaborate. I believe we can do wonderful things for this community for our young people for our future. We need a district attorney who can bring excellence in all those areas and that’s what I intend to do.”

While Battisti and Korchak’s primary will be taking place on June 25th, voters will not see Gelson on the ballot until the general election in November.
