Flag Day is not only a day to honor our nation’s flag, but to also properly dispose of them.
Members of American Legion Post 80 on Main Street in Binghamton held their annual flag retirement ceremony.
Following brief remarks and a prayer, the legionnaires burned roughly 500 flags that were old, torn or discolored in barrels outside of the legion hall.
Brett Williams is Vice Commander for Post 80.
He served in the Air Force in Vietnam from 1967 to 69.
Williams says anyone can drop off their old flags at the Legion for proper disposal.
Williams says, “This is the proper way to do it. You bring it to an American Legion Post and we burn the flags, we retire the colors for you. You just don’t throw them in the garbage can.”
Williams says many of the flags are smaller ones that are placed on the graves of veterans and are changed out every year.
