Akshar sworn in as new Undersheriff

Binghamton (WIVT) – Broome County Sheriff Dave Harder has appointed his new Undersheriff.

Fred Akshar was sworn in yesterday along side his mother.

Akshar was hired as a Broome County Sheriff’s deputy in 2002.

He was then promoted to sergeant and then a detective in 2005.

In 2011, he graduated from the FBI Academy and was named Captain of Law Enforcement in January of 2012.

As Captain, he oversaw the highway patrol and detective divisions.

Akshar said he is looking forward to increased community outreach efforts and transparency.

“I am deeply humbled and honored at this opportunity. Again, I said earlier that my commitment to this community is very deeply rooted and that’s critically important,” he said.

Broome County Executive Debbie Preston, Binghamton Mayor Rich David, and City Councilman Chris Papastrat were in attendance at the ceremony.

They all agreed Akshar is the best man for the job.

Akshar is replacing former Undersheriff Alex Minor, who stepped down after 45 years of service.
