A local progressive group plans to protest Senator Akshar

Local News

A local progressive group is looking to turn up the heat on State Senator Fred Akshar over his relationship with the mother of a murder victim.

Members of Indivisible Binghamton are planning a protest on Friday outside of the State Office Building in downtown Binghamton, calling on Akshar to resign.

The Senator recently acknowledged that he had had a consensual sexual encounter with the mother of Mario Masciarelli while he was a member of the Broome County Sheriff’s Office and after Masciarelli’s murderer had been convicted.

Indivisible calls the relationship a gross abuse of power and authority and are also asking Republicans to remove Akshar from the Senate Crime Victims Committee.

In a video statement posted to his Facebook page, Akshar insists that no laws or codes of ethics were violated at any time and that the allegations against him are part of a concerted, politically-motivated smear attempt.
