A gold star is unveiled to honor a guitarist and teacher

A musician who taught hundreds of students how to play guitar has been memorialized with his own star.

The wife and son of Roy Ettinger unveiled a gold star this afternoon, honoring the late guitarist and teacher.

Ettinger, who died last November at the age of 66, started playing guitar at the age of 12 and became a touring musician with several bands, including his own, DICE.

For roughly 40 years, he operated a guitar studio in the Weeks and Dickinson Building in Binghamton where he taught guitar lessons.

His son Darrin says the lessons were about more than music. “The guitar studio was a place where musicians came to learn.  They came here to work out things in their own lives.  My Dad supported himself and then a family through playing and teaching what he loved.  He passed away leaving behind musicians and a city that will forever remember his contributions and his name.”

Ettinger’s is the 55th star on display inside the Broome County Forum Theatre.

His name was also the first honoree to be displayed on the theatre’s new electronic marquee.
