Jury selection is underway for the re-trial of a Binghamton man once convicted of murdering his estranged wife and her boyfriend.
Six jurors were sworn in today for the re-trial of Aaron Powell.
Powell was serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole for murdering 35 year-old Christina Powell and her friend 24 year-old Mario Masciarelli in March 2013.
However, an appellate division ruled that one of the jurors that found Powell guilty should have been disqualified because she is a partner at a law firm that both handled Powell’s divorce and a custody battle over the couple’s child.
The new trial is expected to last six weeks.
Jury selection will continue tomorrow with a new pool of potential jurors as they look for six more plus alternates.
