Friends remember Shakeel Khan of Vestal

Friends are remembering Shakeel Khan of Vestal, who was murdered outside of his business over the weekend.

On Saturday at about 10 PM, Khan was shot and killed by a masked gunman while closing his restaurant, Halal Bites on Riverside Drive in Johnson City.

JC Police continue to investigate the murder and the killer is still at large.

Imam of the Islamic Organization of the Southern Tier Anas Shaikh <Anes Shake> says Khan moved here from Brooklyn 2 years ago to start his business and create a better life for his family.

He says Khan was a great friend that was always looking to help and even catered most of their events. “His big burley mustache and smiling face will always be remembered by everyone. When you walked into his store he would always great you ‘hello my friend.’ I think alot of people are going to miss that. They’re going to miss the great food that he had and the service that they had.”

Khan leaves behind a wife and 3 children, who are students in the Vestal Central School District.

His funeral service was held in Brooklyn where his extended family lives and his body was brought back to his native country of Pakistan to be buried.

Khan was the primary financial provider for his family so the Islamic Organization has started a Go Fund Me to help them through this difficult transition:
