Flag raising in Binghamton brings awareness to the need for organ donors

News

A flag raising was held in downtown Binghamton to bring awareness to the need for organ donors.

April is National Donate Life Month and in recognition, the city raised a Donate Life flag.

The month is meant to honor and bring awareness to the need for organ donors.

Southern Tier Donation Specialist Jessica Nederostek says a single organ donor can help 8 or 9 people while a tissue donor can help 50 to 100 people.

She says that while over 90 percent of people are in favor of organ donation, only 2 percent of those that die become a donor.

“It’s about saving someone that relies on another person for their medical treatment. That sort of makes organ donation and transplant unique. You can’t run to the drug store and pick up your prescription or go to the hospital for your treatment unless another family says yes to you having that treatment.”

There are over 9,500people on the transplant waiting list with New York State having the third greatest need for organ and tissue donors nationally.

Residents can register to become donors on their driver’s license applications.
