Fire departments across Broome County are seeking volunteers to help keep the area safe.
County officials joined local firefighters to promote the 11th annual Volunteer Firefighter Recruitment Day.
The day serves as an opportunity to welcome the community into local firehouses and learn about volunteer opportunities.
Public Information Officer for the Vestal Fire Department says you don’t need to be out in the field fighting fires to volunteer.
He says some of the positions they are in need of include fire police that direct traffic, drivers, pump operators and photographers. “Right now many times on a fire call we may only have 2 people on a truck because there’s just not enough people available. Some of them are at work and they can’t get off. We particularly need those available during the day time that’d be a great help.”
Broome County has 31 volunteer fire departments with over a thousand volunteer firefighters.
Recruitment day will be Saturday from noon to 3 at all the various county departments including Chenango Fire Company, Endwell Fire Department and the West Windsor Fire Company.
